Two-stage air purification installation with spraying tower and gas scrubber for the purification of acids and paint pigments

The problem

From our customer, a manufacturer of paint pigments, we were asked whether we could purify the air coming from their production environment. Pigments are made by using different powders and light amounts of acids.

Our solution

In order to not only limit exposure inside the factory, but also to limit emissions towards the external environment as much as possible, we opted for a two-stage air purification installation:

  1. A spraying tower using RO (Reverse Osmosis) water at a slightly higher pressure (5 bar), to obtain the finest possible water droplets.
  2.  A gas scrubber, in which an intense contact between the airflow and water droplets is obtained with the help of the generated turbulence and cyclone effect.

The air is led from the production vessels, using PPs ventilation ducting , to the spraying tower and dust collector. After the scrubbing process, the filtered cleaned air is let out via the fans and a chimney made of PE HD, into the environment.

The spraying tower has two functions:

  1. Cooling of the incoming airflow. At higher temperatures, there is more airflow cooling due to adiabatic effects.
  2. A first capture of acids and dust particles will take place in the water droplets being vaporized and made heavier in the spray tower.

The purification process is continued more intensively in the gas scrubber. In the first zone, due to turbulence and high velocity of the air, we get further wetting of the dust particles. The airflow is then further drawn in, the more heavily loaded dust particles are washed out of the airflow with a centrifugal force. By mean of gravity, they end up in the collector tray at the bottom. Finally a droplet separator is provided as last resort to collect both droplets and dust.

In order to supply a completely abundant system, our sister company Almeco opted for 2 identical fans in PPs. Finally, noise measurements were also carried out in order to subsequently adjust the chimney and create a noise reduction of +- 20 dB(a).
